How to apply design principles effectively?
Our mentor Emmanuel Olotu will share tips to create a meaningful design using 8 Design Principles: Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Hierarchy, White Space, Repetition, Movement, and Unity.
1. Applying Balance.
The weight of all the elements must be arranged evenly to give a balanced impression.
Could be arranged symmetrically or asymmetrically.
2. Applying Contrast.
Colors and shades must be properly contrasted against each other.
Apply on overlay elements to enhance visibility and legibility.
Could use plug-ins or online contrast checker.
3. Applying Emphasis
Provide a guide to help the audience to know your main point.
Some of the ways are by adjusting the element size and color contrast.
4. Applying Hierarchy.
The arrangement of the elements.
The correct ranking of information in a design.
Some of the ways are by adjusting the element size and weight.
5. Applying White Space.
Known as negative space.
The area with no elements.
Help design appears non-congested and carves out special meanings to your identity icon.
6. Applying Repetition.
Some parts of the design must be consistent all through your communication materials.
Important when working with branding materials.
Could be applied through the placement of the brand icon, the usage of fonts, or the overall design tone.
7. Applying Movement.
Design elements must work in harmony.
Should be done subtly for the audience to accept the design as a single piece of information.
8 . Applying Unity.
All the elements of your design maintain a form of harmony with each other.
This comprises the adjustment of fonts, shapes, colors, layout, and all the other elements.
The elements need to be in the right proportion and applications to form one great design piece.

Quote of the week
“A career is about legacy, not about a cool job title. As long as you are looking for that in your own authentic way, that’s how you know you are walking in your own path to build YOUR career. Just remember that as you walk your path and trust your guts.”
