How To Talk to Non-Designers 🤝!
Valuable tips on how to communicate with non-designers effectively.
Hello 👋, welcome to ADPList’s Weekly Pulse - a weekly newsletter dedicated to helping our community members to learn and grow together; with helpful design tips, upcoming group sessions, and community happenings.
🔥 Learning of the week:
How to communicate with non-designers effectively? ✨
Sometimes it is difficult to establish good cooperation and communication at work 😣. Our mentor Benjamin George will share tips on how to communicate with your internal and external team better.
1. Understand your stakeholder landscape:
Immediate team: the people you interact with every day.
External stakeholders: the people who are less involved in your day-to-day but can still make or break a project.
Execs & leads: the people who approve of your project.
2. Communicating with your immediate team. (E.g: Project Managers)
Project Managers value: timelines and staying on schedule, managing scope and budget, and keeping everyone in the loop.
As a designer, you can focus on the possible ways to speed up your design work, manage expectations on any changes, and share updates frequently on your progress.
3. Communicating with external stakeholders. (E.g: Marketing team)
Marketing team value: Brand, voice, and tone consistency as well as creating a valuable product that is sellable.
As a designer, you can focus on creating styles that match the brand, using existing content guidelines, and making sure features solve the customer pain points.
4. Communicating with execs and leads.
Leads and execs value growing the business, strategic alignment, solving customer problems, and concise information.
As a designer, you can focus on tangible success metrics on how design decisions will impact business goals, demonstrate the solution maps, strategic initiatives, or roadmaps, and describe solutions through the customer lens.
5. Key takeaways:
Empathy for everyone, not just users.
Speak their language; create meaningful conversations.
Be direct. Remove fluff; be concise.
Understand relationships; what is important to different people.
Recharge trust; build rapport and trust stability.
