🔥 Learning of the week:
How to negotiate your salary and job offer effectively? ✨
Our mentors Jessica Hall and David Boddy will share effective tips and the misconceptions about salary and job offer negotiations.
1. The misconceptions on salary and job offer negotiations.
Good negotiators don’t always get good raises and offers
You are expected to negotiate when offered a raise or offer
You don’t have to take the first deal on the table
You shouldn’t be talking to one company at a time
2. How to negotiate your salary?
Salary increases are not only your Line Manager's decision. Being strategic, collaborative, and aware are the important characteristics of success.
Understand your internal timelines.
Build the provable goals that display contributions
Decide what is important to you
Ask, Ask, Ask.
3. How to negotiate your job offer?
Companies have invested in you both time and effort. Leverage this position and focus on your motivations.
Take time to understand your motivations.
Be motivated by more than just money.
Be empathic and collaborative. It is not a zero-sum game.
Be empowered by the time and money the company has spent on you.
Leverage other conversations with other companies.
4. More insightful tips from Jess and David:
Connect with external recruiters, friends who are working in the company, or get information from Glassdoor to know the budget for the role.
If you do not ask or negotiate, you might lose some equity or other opportunities.
You might gain more than what you are negotiating for if you are being empathic and collaborative in your negotiation.
If you are in the position to put the first number down, go high so that you have some room to move in your negotiation process.
Engage with the company through follow-ups via email or text messages to get clarification on the salary or job offer.
